At the start of the game, Kanagawa Yokai now lets you choose the subjects for your prints. Umbrellas, kites and lanterns are three new subjects of study that your master can teach you. When setting up the game, you can now choose to play with two card families from the base game and two from the expansion. As a result, games become more varied and strategic. You’ll need to adapt your choices to the new diplomas if you hope to win. As for the prints, they’re more magnificent than ever, enhanced by the game’s 54 new cards.
Among these new cards, which invite you to paint parasols, kites and lanterns, several require you to add a Yokai token to your workshop. Yokai, of which there are 3 in the game, are mischievous, prankish spirits whose purpose is to disturb you while you work. They distract the artist and penalize the player with a malus at the end of the game. Fortunately, it is possible to pass them on to other players if you follow the right lessons or obtain the right diplomas. At the end of the game, you lose 1 point if you still have one Yokai token, 4 points if you have two, and 9 points if you have all three. The presence of the Yokai won’t always be evil, however, as a diploma will reward the player who has all 3 Yokai tokens during the game.
